Comic Art Training Comes to Guyana

(July 17, 2018)

‘The Guyana Animation Network Inc. is back at it again to inspire creativity, utilizing the arts and innovative methods through comic art.

2018 marks yet another year that the Guyana Animation Network Inc. will be hosting its annual Summer Camp but this year comes with a twist: Comic Art Training. The Comic Art 2k18 Summer Camp is the Guyana Animation Network Inc’s Third (3rd) Annual Digital Painting Summer Camp activity since their official launch in 2016.

This year’s Summer Camp intends to explore the world of comic art and comic book character designs through training on comic book drawing and literacy. The Summer Camp will run for one full week, from the 6th – 11th August 2018 from 10:00 hrs. to 14:00 hrs, at the University of Guyana Turkeyen Campus in the Centre for Information Technology (CIT).

The Summer Camp will feature guest trainer, Mr. Shawn Alleyne, Barbadian-born American living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with over 15 years of teaching comic book drawing and literacy in schools. With a fusion of sci-fi, mythology, his Caribbean roots and love of hip-hop, Mr. Alleyne currently works in the demanding field of freelance art as a Writer, Inker, and Instructor to bring creative products to life.

The Organization started planning its Comic Art collaboration with Mr. Alleyne last year after meeting with him at CARIFESTA XIII (Barbados) 2017. The organization wishes to thank the Government of Guyana, Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry; Director of Culture, Ms. Tamika Boatswain, and the CARIFESTA committee for providing this initial opportunity.

The organizing team for this year’s Summer Camp expressed their pleasure in hosting this activity as a catalyst for training members of the Guyanese community to design and make their own comics.

“In the wake of several requests by local newspaper agencies, parents and children, the Guyana Animation Network Inc., commonly referred to as GAN, decided to explore providing training in comic art for patrons from 8 years old and up.” – data retrieved from the Organization’s social media engagements.

The Guyana Animation Network Inc. invites members of the public to register for their Comic Art 2K18 Summer Camp online via their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages OR to join the Organization at their Summer Camp’s launch party on Friday, August 3rd, 2018 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the University of Guyana’s Education Lecture Theatre (ELT) Building.

The Organization wishes to extend gratitude to its official sponsors for this year’s Summer Camp: Metro Office and Computer Supplies, Bad Monkey in the Giftland Mall and the University of Guyana, Philanthrophy, Alumni and Civic Engagement (PACE).
